Elvaeda-Chapter 5 3/3

AVERY

I peered into the dense woods, trying to figure a way out.

Danica stood beside me, frowning deeply. I sighed, and kicked a pebble into the pond. It had been hours since the twins left for their town, but me and Danica were still trying to find a way out of the thick forest around us. After looking around for more than four hours, we were still entrapped in the rubber tree woods, and I was loosing patience fast.

Danica collapsed onto a nearby rock, sighing, her face glistening with sweat. I folded my arms neatly across my chest and sat down onto the grass with a thump. The heat of the sun raged on, drowning us in sweat. The forest was quiet, except for the multiple bird calls that rang overhead. Wherever those birds were calling from, I wanted to break their necks. Trying to ignore the ringing bird calls sounding from above would be difficult in the most relaxed situations, and it was certainly impossible now.

The bushes overhead suddenly moved, and me and Danica leaped onto our feet. We expected to see a dangerous animal or a mad killer with a gun or something really horrid like that, but what we didn’t expect to see was what came out of the bush; A teenage boy with a mop of dark hair.

He caught sight of us and smiled, his green eyes sparkling in the glittering sunlight. I could feel my cheeks go all red and hectic, then immediately had to look away. Danica, unfortunately caught sight of my reaction to his sudden appearance and giggled with her hand covering her mouth. I wanted to hit her. (In a friendly way)

The boy made his way towards us, and according to his looks he seemed about 16 or 17, with dark green eyes and a huge mop of shaggy dark-blond hair, which made my heart skip a beat. Soon, after carefully walking past the forest of dense rubber trees, he soon made it to where we were standing and smiled at us, raking his fingers through his hair. I sighed without meaning to, and immediately slapped my hands to my mouth, face glowing as red as a beet. Danica giggled behind me, and I shot her a look.

The teenager didn’t seem to notice our juvenile actions, and instead said: “Are you…Avery Melissa and Jaclyn Deforest?” I nodded, but Danica shook her head while putting her hand in front of her like a policeman stopping the traffic. “My name is Danica Forsythia,” she corrected him, and his mouth made a little ‘o’ shape. “Jaclyn Deforest is….um, not here at the moment.”

She suddenly grew all hot and flustered, afraid of saying the horrible truth, afraid of saying that Jackie was….well, um, dead. Even I couldn’t bear say it, so I didn’t bother correcting her when she told the boy the news.

The boy nodded, shoving his long bangs out of his face. He shoved his hands into his pockets, then looked into the deep forest surrounding us. “Well, whoever you are,” he said, glancing at me and smiling, making my cheeks go hot. “What the hell are you doing here?”

Danica shrugged, then said: “We’re not sure ourselves.” The boy nodded in understanding, then jabbed his thumb into the woods behind him, where he had come. “Well, there’s certainly nothing to do here,” he said. “Wanna go over to my place for the night?”

I immediately flew into the conversation without a second thought. “YESSS!!!” I shrieked while jumping in the air. Then, realizing I answered a bit too quickly (plus Danica and the boy were staring at me, the boy out of shock, Danica giggling her head off) I immediately went red. I could actually feel myself heating up. The boy just laughed.

“Don’t have to act so eager,” he said, and my cheeks grew more hot and red. He smiled at me, his hair falling (once again!!) into his face. “Anyway, I’m Dennis. Dennis Maguire,” he said, and started towards the way he had come. After walking a few steps, he stopped midway and stared back at us. “You wanna come to my place or what?”

“Well….” Danica said, glancing over to me. “I would be flattered, and so would a certain somebody….” That was when I walked over to her and jabbed her in the ribs, what I always do when someone is being ridiculous. It seems like Danica had been taking Jackie lessons.

Dennis laughed, then offered me his hand. I could feel steam pouring out my ears. He fortunately didn’t seem to notice. “If that is so,” he said, his hand outstretched, hovering in the air in front of me. “Then allow me to escort you, future majesties.”

I just stared at his hand, then up at him. Danica was giggling in the background, like a kindergartener. I shot her a look, then took his hand, and he smiled, and after some effort, I did too.

CHARLOTTE

Isabella waited for us at the mouth of Elvaeda’s entrance, looking very stern. She crossed her arms over her chest, eyeing us up and down. Finally, she asked: “Where have you been?” in that tone of voice your mom gives you when you arrive home from a party you were not supposed to be to.

Charlie shoved past her, ignoring her question. I swallowed. Isabella was the elder of war. She could do a lot of harm if she had too. She eyed me suspiciously, her eyes tiny slits as her black-brown hair swayed in the evening breeze. I knew I shouldn’t have gone and left her majesty when she was still in such a state, but we also had other responsibilities, and that was protecting our future queens, but Isabella didn’t see it that way. Her accusing eyes followed me all the while I entered Elvaeda.

“Her majesty is gone, you know that?” Isabella accused, and we stiffened. Though we knew that Queen Mercedes had left this world, it was hard when somebody just spouted it out, especially someone as cold feeling as Isabella. She hadn’t taken kindly to a new queen, and now that she was gone it seems like we have to.

Elvaeda was pretty much deserted on evenings, with the little ones going to bed early and the adults hunting for food in the jungle, you could pretty much hear your blood flowing through your veins if it got any quieter. I heard Charlie sigh, the wind helping him blow his blonde bangs out of his face.

However, this silence was broken as Isabella drew out her bow and arrow in lightning speed and shooting it at us. Luckily, we elves were born quite nimble, and we managed to dodge the incoming arrows, their sharp blades protruding the grass and the ground below. I stared back at Isabella, aghast.

“What are you doing?” I shrieked at her just as she was filling her hand with another big bunch of arrows. Charlie looked dazed, not expecting a huge tidal wave of arrows coming after him. Again, I shrieked at her: “Isabella, what are you doing!?”

“Something I should have done long ago,” Isabella half whispered. With quick speed, she shot multiple arrows, but they weren’t coming for me.

Charlie screeched as the arrows protruded his skin. He crumpled to the floor, his blood soaking the grass below red. I stared at Isabella in horror. She just smiled at me, the sort of smile bad guys in movies do when they think they won.

“Isabella….” I breathed, not able to get my voice out of my throat. She drew another couple of arrows from the barrel that was strapped to her back. She aimed it at me, but I did not resist.

“You left the queen to die,” she said, a slight tear running down her face. “And now you expect three little kids to fill in the gap. I’m not going to allow that.” She stretched the string of her bow, the sharp edges of the arrows sneering back at me. Isabella wiped her tear away, then smiled at me. “If anyone should be the new queen,” she whispered, loosening her grip on the pulled string. “It’s ME!!!”

The last thing I saw was multiple arrows darting over to me.
